Ridgewood Moving Services (Ridgewood Moving) is always trying to find ways to support others, which is why we work with nonprofit organizations like Move For Hunger to help make a difference in the world. When clients have nonperishable food items that they no longer need, they can choose to donate to Move For Hunger so it can go to someone that needs it. Move For Hunger also follows its mission by throwing events to collect donations and spread awareness about the organization.

How do you know if your food is good to donate? It may sound as simple as checking the expiration date, but you may be surprised to find out that there’s more to it than that! Here to help us answer this question is Alexa Zupko, who wrote an entire blog about this on Move For Hunger’s website. We highly recommend you read the original post here, but you can read a piece of the post below:

Sell By vs. Best if Used By: “Sell by” is solely for the retailer; this helps guide them on how long they should keep the product out on the floor, whereas “best if used by” is used for quality purposes! Do not be concerned with safety here, as much as you could be about freshness or taste.

Canned Goods: Many unopened canned goods, such as tomato sauce, prepared soups, and vegetables, are good for eighteen months past their expiration dates! However, if cans are dented, food banks are unable to give them out.

Crackers and pretzels: Can last up to three months past the expiration date!

Water Bottles: Many companies put a two-year date on water bottles, but if they are unopened, they can last for much longer!

Processed peanut butter vs. Natural peanut butter: Processed peanut butter can last up to two years, whereas natural peanut butter can last up to nine months.
